What jewellery to rock this Spring? Read on!

Crystal bright statement jewelry with tribal influences is the dominant jewelry trend for Spring Summer 2013. Large crystal pieces in diverse colors, mixed with rope, leather and beads to create an ethnic inspired look. Taking the ethnic look further we are seeing large heavy metal jewelry reminiscent of the 80s, with African tribal influences but with a sharp modern edge. Also on the runways for Spring 2013 we continued to spot spiky jewelry taken up a notch. This is a trend which is not going away, and expect spikes incorporated into statement necklaces and large pointy cuff bracelets. And if you though brights were over, they have just begun! Neons everywhere and acting as the predominant color. Lots of neon plastics and crystals. This is a season to remember.

In fact, if its even possible, jewelry has gotten even bigger than 2012. Bold and bright with tribal touches.spring-2013-jewelry-trends

5 Questions With… Desti Saint of Desti Saint Handbags

305672_341832359210595_1211292532_n

When I first met Desti about two years ago, I thought she had the coolest name ever. The name was begging to be something big. What I know now, is on top of the killer name, she is nothing short of an incredible human being – a talented designer, a devoted and loving mother and wife, and the most down-to-earth person you’d ever meet.

We spoke to Desti for the second part of our designer interview series… read on to find out more!

We know you started designing because you couldn’t find a gold bag, have you made the perfect gold bag? Which one is it?
I first made a gold bag that I felt the colour and texture was perfect. It came with a bright pink lining and the production run sold out within a few days. The original sample bag I made is with my Mum and she still uses it…it is still going strong !

Being a designer is not all about being creative. Which part of producing bags do you enjoy the least?
I think I least enjoy the admin side of things, there is a lot more then you realize that needs to be done. Invoicing gets me as you have to be very particular with getting codes, quantity and pricing right …am I am not a huge fan of Math!

And what do you find most gratifying?
I just love the search ! I love putting on my backpack and walking for miles for inspiration, looking at leathers, fabrics and seeing ways to create something that is unique, functional and hoping someone will like the item as much as I do.

561215_10151531336755375_874085859_n

What do you do when you’re not working?
I have three fabulous children, two cheeky dogs and a very kind husband so that takes up a lot of time. Just being there for emotional support for my kids to me is very important; teenage years are not easy but so far so good with them.

If you could put your bag on anybody dead or alive but who would it be and why?
I would love to put a bag on Sophia Loren who symbolizes everything women. Active in many charity causes, Sophia Loren is especially devoted to programs that improve the lives of young people. In 1991 Loren received the Academy Honorary Award for her contributions to world cinema and was declared “one of the world cinema’s treasures”.

The other lady would be Michelle Obama, I think she is tremendous example to women, I admire her “can do” attitude, her commitment to the underprivileged and the fact she always has a smile …such a winner!

DIY Beaded Lace Choker Inspired by Downton Abbey…

beaded lace and ribbon choker DIY inspired by Downton Abbey

I recently {and finally!} started the Downton Abbey series… and not 2 episodes in, I was itching toDIY a fabulous choker inspired by their attire. For this particular look though, I was inspired more by the high necklines of many of their dresses rather than a necklace specifically. But I’ve already got ideas for more statement types of necklaces as well. I’m feeling a high neckline return on the horizon, and I’m betting it’s all thanks to Downton. And the 90′s revival, of course.

Here’s What You’ll Need…

* Lace or lace trim with scalloped edges {look for lace that is soft to the touch}
* Ribbon… I used 1-1/2″ satin but velvet or grosgrain will work as well
* Black and gold plastic beads {glass are a bit too heavy for this}
* Needle/Thread/Scissors

Steps…

* First, a quick tutorial on cutting the edge of your ribbon…

beaded lace and ribbon choker DIY inspired by Downton Abbey

* Measure your neck to decide how much lace and ribbon you want.

* If using a lace trim, you only need to cut the length. I cut the width of mine to almost 3″

* With your lace flat {finished side down} place your ribbon lengthwise and centered over it {finished side down}. If your trim is the same size as your ribbon, skip this step. I folded my lace over and pinned it down so the top of the choker is solid black/lace and the bottom is sheer/lace. This gives it a nice finished look on the front, hiding any rough edges in the back. The scalloped edge will be at the base of your neck.

* I simply hand stitched my lace and ribbon together {along the top, sides, & where the lace ended} because it was quick and easiest for me, you could use the machine as well.

* It should look something like this… {& if you’d prefer it without beads, you’re done!}

* I chose to leave my ribbons REALLY long because they just look so pretty and dramatic but you can cut yours to your desired length. NOTE: I used the ribbon for extra stability and for the pretty bow in the back, you may choose a different closure if you like and disregard the ribbon alltogether.

* Double thread your needle and grab your beads

beaded lace and ribbon choker DIY inspired by Downton Abbey

* Begin on the end and knot your fabric to your lace, hiding the threaded knot in the back.

* Begin beading. I followed the line of the lace and made three, double rows of scalloped beads, alternating small, large, and gold. You may add as many as you like to make it more detailed or less. Allow some room for beads moving but not so much that the thread shows. Knot each section you finish whether you have to rethread your needle or not.

Voila… Voila…

5 Questions With… Celeste of Heels Diva

Celeste Tee 1 - Media Jan 13

We’re kickstarting our 5 questions interview series with the lady behind Heels Diva, a line of wicked cool shoe clips that personalises and brings your favourite heels several notches higher in the style metre.

1. What made you want to start Heels Diva?
A visit to the cobbler gave me the idea of crafting my own shoe accessories line. At that time I was serving my job notice period as a Property Manager when he pointed out the scratches on the back of my nearly-new pair of heels. When I asked if he could fix them, he answered that many of his customers were coming in with the same problem, especially those who had invested in designer shoes. He even said,”If I could find a solution for that, my customers would be very happy.”

Later that evening as I discussed my next career path over drinks with a Dutch friend and related the conversation I had with the cobbler, this was when she introduced the concept of shoe accessories to me. Many of my friends including myself would buy a pair of shoes because of the detail or the ribbon on the shoe. I thought that if I could create clip-on for shoes, that way people could select the shoe clips that they like and attach it to any of their existing shoes. That was the perfect setup for a clever business niche.

I feel that this business works for me because it is very much in alignment with my passion and who I am. It allows me to combine my love for creating beautiful handcrafted things and shoes into a business that value adds to woman.

2. Which’s most gratifying about doing shoe clips?
The most gratifying about doing shoe clips was to see how excited my customers get when they wear our shoe clips on their own shoes. Despite being the same pair of shoe clips, they look different on different shoes and when worn by different people depending on the individual’s style. I am glad I can be part of the process to create wearable designs.

3. You do customisations. Do you have favourites, or interesting stories that have come up along the way?
Many of my customers like collecting Heels Diva shoe clips because from time to time, we create designs in limited quantity. Some customers would approach me to design shoe clips that match their wedding theme or in a certain colour to match a particular dress/shoes. What aids in customisation is when customers can provide the material for the shoe clips, e.g. if they have a certain flower or fabric that they like to be included in the shoe clips. That way, the shoe clips can be more easily customized to suit what they want.

There are also many ways to wear shoe clips. Besides wearing on shoes, shoe clips can also be worn as a brooch. I remember one time a customer turn up at our booth clipping it on the lower side of her oversize blouse after just being briefly told that she could use it as a brooch. There are also others who wear it on their bags or even on their hair, especially the feathered designs.

4. What makes a fabulous pair of shoes?
A fabulous pair of shoes is one that is comfortable and yet unique with some special detail on it that have people asking where you bought the shoes from. That is why I always encourage people to invest in a comfortable plain shoe, even if you need to spend some time breaking in to. When paired with our shoe clips, it is such a great way to turn a pair of comfortable shoes into multiple looks. If you want more glamour, choose designs that have crystals and diamente on them or those with feathers. For simpler looks, go for the Classic Chic collection featured with genuine leather and beads.

5. What should a woman never leave home without?
I think what a woman should never leave home is her confidence. I think being comfortable in her own skin and having a firm belief of who she is, is the most beautiful “accessory” she can wear.

Wanderlust: Giraffe Manor

Unlike a lot of kids, I never wanted a pat hamster, or a pet kitten when I was a little girl. Instead, I wanted a giraffe. The way I saw it, you go big, or you go home, right? Fast forward a couple of years later, while wanderlusting on the Internet, I found this magical place called the Giraffe Manor, a luxury boutique hotel located 12 miles outside of Nairobi, was set up by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife as a breeding and conservation center for the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Can you think of anything better than waking up in Kenya to feed a herd of giraffes over your breakfast table?!

On my bucket list, for sure!

Our Favourite Spring Summer 13 Trends!

Happy 2013! New year means new resolutions… and new trends of course! Here are five of our favourites!

Get Graphic

As seen at: Mary Katrantzou, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten, Holly Fulton

How to wear: Go bold or go home. Whether you prefer trompe l’oeil, like Mary Katrantzou’s stamp and banknote-inspired designs, or symmetrical swirls, as referenced by Holly Fulton, keep accessories to a minimum and let the print shine.

Sheen Queen

As seen at: Jonathan Saunders, Christian Dior, Mary Katrantzou, Viktor & Rolf, Burberry Prorsum, Diane von Furstenberg

How to wear: The trick to iridescent fabrics is to ground them with a simple neutral hue by day and a bold, solid colour by night.

Pencils At The Ready

As seen at: Erdem, Roland Mouret, Christopher Kane, Burberry Prorsum

How to wear: Ladylike and demure or sexy and sophisticated, the pencil skirt is fashion gold. This season it takes centre stage in clashing colourways and on-trend patterns.

Fluorescent Fashion

As seen at: Antonio Berardi, House of Holland, Simone Rocha, Osman

How to wear: Another trend sure to put off minimalists: neon. Soften punchy pink or loud lemon with a sheer blouse for a delicate effect. Or, embrace this statement-making rainbow and go tone-on-tone with structural separates.

90s Nostalgia

As seen at: Ashish, Balmain, DSquared2, Topshop Unique

How to wear: Unpack your baggy jeans, high-waisted trousers and slip dresses, it’s the return of the decade that brought us grunge – with a shiny twist, of course. Smells like teen spirit, then!

DIY Your Xmas Gifts Part 1

DIY Rope Necklace w/ Crystal Copper Plumbing Elbow

diy rope necklace

Gift-buying is heaps of fun… until the credit card bill comes in. So instead of buying something for everybody in your life, why not have some fun and DIY some gifts for your girlfriends? Start with this easy peasy rope necklace!
This is one of my simpler DIYs and only took about five minutes or so to make.

Here’s What You’ll Need…

diy rope necklace

* Soft nylon rope cording {I stole mine from a pretty gift bag but you can find it in the curtain and/or trim section of your craft/fabric store}
90-degree Copper plumbing elbow {from your local hardware store}
* Crystals or gems {mine are self-adhesive, so you’ll need glue if yours are not}
* Jewelry closure of sorts {though I just tied mine in a little knot}

Steps…

diy rope necklace

* Remove rope from bags… this rope is finished at the ends so it won’t fray. If yours is not finished, you will either have to finish it or use a jewelry closure finding to keep your rope in tact.

diy rope necklace

* Simply slip your rope through your copper elbow.

diy rope necklace

* Embellish as you wish. I thought I may cover the entire piece, so I grabbed my tiny nail gems as well, but I settled on a simpler, 4 gem motif.

* Again, I tied my necklace in a simple knot but you can finish it off with a proper jewelry clasp/closure if you wish.

diy rope necklace

*NOTE: The soft pink rope is really pretty next to the copper elbow, but other colors for contrast like ivory, blue, navy, burgundy and forest green would be pretty as well.

Voila!

diy rope necklace

Tie both ropes together and wear it long! I actually like the simple tied knots but you can also just purchase a longer rope.

Have Fun!
